Uptown Stitch is where creativity meets craftsmanship. Founded by Cheri and Jenn, our studio blends tailoring, embroidery, DTF printing, and sewing classes into a one-stop destination for style and self-expression.
Company History
The Early Years
In 2017, Cheri purchased a historic home – over 100 years old – with a dream of creating a sewing school for kids and adults alike. With tailoring in her blood and a lifelong passion for teaching, she envisioned a place where sewing skills could be passed down to the next generation.
The Covid-19 Pandemic
In 2020, during the pandemic, Uptown Stitch was rezoned for commercial use. While traditional alterations slowed, Cheri’s creativity and determination kept the dream alive. She expanded into in-home curtain adjustments, custom soft furnishings, and other home décor services, finding new ways to serve her community.
Moving On
By 2021, Uptown Stitch officially opened its doors to customers. What began as a sewing school has since grown into a thriving one-stop shop – a full-service master tailor studio offering alterations, embroidery, DTF printing, and much more.

Today, Uptown Stitch is known not only for sewing classes but also for being a creative hub where tailoring meets design, and where tradition blends with innovation.

Our Founder - Cheri's Story
Born in Fort Myers, Florida, Cheri Kent grew up surrounded by the world of tailoring and dry cleaning. Her father, a master tailor, and her mother, a business-minded dry cleaner, created a thriving family business where Cheri discovered her passion at an early age. By the time she was just 10 years old, Cheri was collaborating with her father, hemming ROTC pants for local schools, while learning the importance of quality and craftsmanship. Cheri’s upbringing gave her both technical skill and business sense, which she carried forward as she started her own family. After moving to Orlando with her husband and two young daughters (later joined by a son), she continued to hone her sewing talents, designing and creating homemade costumes for her children and taking on sewing work in her community. For more than a decade, Cheri worked at a local dry cleaner’s, building her expertise and deepening her knowledge of trade. Yet her dream was always bigger: to create a place where she could not only serve customers but also pass on the art of sewing to future generations.
In 2017, Cheri purchased a historic house with a vision of transforming it into a sewing school and design studio. After rezoning in 2020, she officially opened the doors in 2021, welcoming both sewing students and alteration clients. Today, Cheri’s dream has grown into a vibrant business that offers a wide range of services, from tailoring and embroidery to sewing education, all while employing a talented team of six.
With over 40 years of experience as a master tailor, Cheri Kent continues her family’s legacy of craftsmanship and entrepreneurship. She is dedicated to keeping the art of sewing alive, inspiring her students, and serving her community with skill, passion, and heart.
